What is an X-ray?

An X-ray is a commonly used imaging procedure that is fast and painless. It enables your healthcare provider to visualize the internal structures of your body without the need for surgery.

During an X-ray, beams are passed through your body to create an image. Different structures absorb varying amounts of X-ray energy depending on their density. Dense materials like bone and metal appear white on the X-ray image, while muscles and fat appear gray, and air in the lungs appears black.

When might I require an X-ray?

X-rays are used to assess and identify a range of conditions in individuals of all ages, including:

  • Broken bones
  • Arthritis
  • Bone infections
  • Osteoporosis
  • Bone tumors
  • Swallowed objects like keys, coins, or small toys

We also offer specialized X-ray equipment to accurately diagnose injuries and arthritis. Additionally, we provide EKG and blood pressure testing for comprehensive medical assessment.

Are there any potential dangers associated with getting an X-ray?

X-rays do involve exposure to radiation, which may worry some individuals. Radiation has the potential to cause cellular mutations that may in some cases lead to cancer.

However, the level of radiation exposure during an X-ray is considered safe, and the benefits of the procedure outweigh the risks to your health.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you might be pregnant, it is important to inform your healthcare provider before undergoing an X-ray. They may suggest alternative imaging methods, such as an ultrasound, to ensure the safety of you and your baby.

What should I be prepared for during an X-ray?

To prepare for the X-ray examination, it may be necessary to remove clothing from the area being imaged. In some instances, a gown may be provided. Additionally, any jewelry, eyeglasses, or metal objects should be taken off as they can appear on the X-ray image.

The digital X-ray results are typically available within minutes. Experienced radiologists at TCMA Care review and interpret the X-ray, providing a report to your healthcare provider who will then discuss the findings with you. Based on the results, they will recommend the most suitable treatment plan for your specific condition. If a broken bone is detected, TCMA Care offers comprehensive fracture care and casting services for minor injuries.

Your health is of personal importance to us.
